Peckham for a night out: the zone, the venue mix and the way home
By Pavel Vassiltsenko, founder ·
Short answer
Peckham is in London's fare Zone 2, and its main station, Peckham Rye, is served by the London Overground's Windrush line and by National Rail [1]. It has no Underground station: the nearest, Bermondsey on the Jubilee line, is about 3.1 kilometres from Peckham Rye in a straight line [1]. MYSOVA draws Peckham as one of the app's 17 zones, about a kilometre across with Peckham Rye station inside it, and a clock-in inside the zone earns 1.3× XP [3]. On MYSOVA's open-data venue map, 17 venues sit inside the zone: 5 bars, 3 live-music venues, 3 pubs, 2 clubs and 4 others [4]. On all seven nights, ten bus routes run through the small hours from stops in the zone [5].
What zone is Peckham?
Fare Zone 2. TfL lists both Peckham stations in Zone 2: Peckham Rye, served by the Windrush line and by Southern, Southeastern and Thameslink trains, and Queens Road Peckham, served by the Windrush line and Southern [1]. Peckham Rye is inside the MYSOVA zone; Queens Road Peckham is about 400 metres beyond its eastern edge [1][3].
By day, the Windrush line runs from Peckham Rye north through Queens Road Peckham, Surrey Quays, Whitechapel, Shoreditch High Street and Dalston Junction to Highbury & Islington, and west through Denmark Hill to Clapham Junction [2].
TfL's fare zones set what you pay to travel. MYSOVA's zones are a separate map: areas where a clock-in in the app earns a multiplier.
Where the MYSOVA zone runs
The Peckham zone covers 0.72 square kilometres, about 900 metres from west to east and 1 kilometre from south to north [3]. Peckham Rye station sits inside it, about 370 metres south of the zone's centre [1][3].
All 17 venues on the map inside the zone lie within about 490 metres of Peckham Rye station, and 14 of them within 400 metres [1][4]. By their nearest postcode, all 17 are in SE15 and in the London Borough of Southwark, so one council licenses them [7]. Peckham's zone stands on its own: the nearest other zones are Bermondsey's, about 1.7 kilometres away, Elephant & Castle's at 1.9 and Brixton's at 2.5 [3].
What kind of places are there?
MYSOVA gives each venue one category. Of the 17 venues inside the zone on the map [4]:
| Category | Venues |
|---|---|
| Bar | 5 |
| Live music | 3 |
| Pub | 3 |
| Club | 2 |
| Rooftop | 2 |
| Cocktail bar | 1 |
| Wine bar | 1 |
Clubs and live-music venues make up 5 of the 17. If you want a club, the map puts 2 inside the zone, both within about 380 metres of Peckham Rye station. If you want a rooftop bar, it puts 2, both within about 200 metres [1][4]. Treat the table as a sample, because the map only holds venues we can place from open data [4]. The app's own catalogue is a separate list, and a venue placed in the wrong category would shift these counts.
Another 6 venues on the map sit within 300 metres outside the zone's edge, 4 of them pubs [3][4]. The server reads the zone from your phone's location when you clock in, so at those venues the 1.3× applies only if you are standing inside the boundary [8].
This post gives no opening hours, so check with the venue before you go. To find how late a venue may serve, see how London's licensing hours work. The Peckham zone page lists venues by name and category, and the London nightlife map shows where the zone runs.
Getting home
No night trains. The Windrush line runs all night on Friday and Saturday nights, but only between Highbury & Islington and New Cross Gate, and Peckham Rye is not on that stretch [2]. New Cross Gate is about 1.6 kilometres beyond the zone's eastern edge [1][3]. From Peckham itself, the night bus is the way home.
Night buses. TfL runs buses through the night on all seven nights, not only on Friday and Saturday [5][6]. Ten routes have a timetabled bus in every hour from 01:00 to 04:59, on all seven nights and in both directions, from stops inside the zone [5]:
| Route | One direction, as TfL names its end stops |
|---|---|
| 12 | Etherow Street to Margaret Street / Oxford Circus |
| 36 | New Cross Bus Garage to Queen's Park Station |
| 37 | Peckham Bus Station to Putney Heath / Green Man |
| 345 | Peckham Bus Station to Natural History Museum / Cromwell Road |
| N63 | Pancras Square to Crystal Palace Parade / College Road |
| N89 | Erith Town Centre / Cross Street to Charing Cross Station |
| N136 | Chislehurst War Memorial to Conduit Street / Hamleys Toy Store |
| N171 | Springbank Road / Hither Green Station to Tottenham Court Road |
| N343 | New Cross Bus Garage to Whitehall / Trafalgar Square |
| N381 | Peckham Bus Station to Horse Guards Parade |
Routes 12, 36, 37 and 345 run around the clock; the six N routes run only at night [5]. Journey Planner and the TfL Go app plan the trip, and TfL's website shows when the next bus is due at your stop [6].
Cabs. Hail only a black cab, and book any minicab in an app, by phone or at the operator's office. TfL calls an unbooked minicab illegal and uninsured for passengers [6]. Our Soho guide sets out the rest of TfL's rules.
Peckham on MYSOVA
MYSOVA is a London social passport: clock in at bars, pubs and clubs, earn XP and meet people where you go. Peckham's zone carries 1.3×, level with Bermondsey, Clerkenwell, Islington and King's Cross [3]. At most venues a clock-in on the Free plan starts from 25 XP; the zone makes it 32.5, which the server rounds to 33. The paid Explorer (£7.99 a month) and Icon (£14.99 a month) plans multiply it again [8]. How clocking in and XP work covers the rest of the sum, and Brixton for a night out covers the zone 2.5 kilometres to the west.
