Brixton for a night out: the zone, the venue mix and the way home
By Pavel Vassiltsenko, founder · · Updated
Short answer
Brixton is in London's fare Zone 2, and its Underground station is the southern end of the Victoria line, which runs all night on Fridays and Saturdays [1][2]. MYSOVA draws Brixton as one of the app's 17 zones, just under a kilometre across with the station inside it, and a clock-in inside the zone earns 1.4× XP [3]. On MYSOVA's open-data venue map, 26 venues sit inside the zone: 8 pubs, 6 bars, 4 clubs and 8 others [4]. On all seven nights, nine bus routes run through the small hours from stops in the zone [5].
What zone is Brixton?
Fare Zone 2. TfL lists both Brixton stations in Zone 2: the Underground station on the Victoria line, and the National Rail station, served by Southeastern [1]. Brixton has no London Overground station. The nearest is Clapham High Street, on the Windrush line, about 820 metres from the edge of the MYSOVA zone [1][3].
TfL's fare zones set what you pay to travel. MYSOVA's zones are a separate map: areas where a clock-in in the app earns a multiplier.
Where the MYSOVA zone runs
The Brixton zone covers 0.73 square kilometres, about 920 metres from west to east and 1 kilometre from south to north [3]. Both Brixton stations sit inside it, and the Underground station is about 190 metres from the zone's centre [1][3].
All 26 venues on the map inside the zone lie within 400 metres of the Underground station [1][4]. They fall in two postcode districts: 22 in SW9 and 4 in SW2 [4]. Brixton and Peckham are separate zones, and Peckham's carries 1.3× [3].
What kind of places are there?
MYSOVA gives each venue one category. Of the 26 venues inside the zone on the map [4]:
| Category | Venues |
|---|---|
| Pub | 8 |
| Bar | 6 |
| Club | 4 |
| Live music | 3 |
| Wine bar | 2 |
| Cocktail bar | 2 |
| Rooftop | 1 |
Clubs and live-music venues make up 7 of the 26. Across MYSOVA's 17 zones, only Soho's holds more clubs on the map, with 10; Shoreditch's holds 2 [3][4]. Treat the table as a sample, because the map only holds venues we can place from open data [4]. The app's own catalogue holds more Brixton venues, and a venue placed in the wrong category would shift these counts.
If you want a club, the map puts 4 inside the zone, all within 400 metres of the station. If you want a pub, it puts 8.
MYSOVA does not publish opening or licensing hours on its website. To find how late a venue may serve, see how London's licensing hours work. The Brixton zone page lists the zone's venues by name and category.
Getting home
Night Tube. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Victoria line runs all night between Brixton and Walthamstow Central. Its 16 night stations include Stockwell, Vauxhall, Victoria, Green Park, Oxford Circus, Euston, King's Cross St. Pancras and Finsbury Park [2]. Night Tube fares are always off-peak, and a Day Travelcard covers journeys that start before 04:30 the next day [6].
Northern line. Clapham North and Stockwell, about 650 and 800 metres from the zone's edge, are on the Northern line's night route between Morden and Edgware or High Barnet, by the Charing Cross branch [2][3]. Stockwell is also the Victoria line's first stop north of Brixton.
Night buses. TfL runs buses through the night on all seven nights, not only on Friday and Saturday [5][7]. Nine routes have a timetabled bus in every hour from 01:00 to 04:59, on all seven nights, from a stop within about 450 metres of the zone's centre [5]:
| Route | One direction, as TfL names its end stops |
|---|---|
| N2 | Crystal Palace Bus Station to Marylebone Station |
| N3 | Bromley North Station to Margaret Street / Oxford Circus |
| N109 | Fairfield Halls to Conduit Street / Hamleys Toy Store |
| N133 | Morden Station to Liverpool Street Station |
| N250 | Fairfield Halls to Brixton Station |
| 35 | Clapham Junction Station / Falcon Road to Shoreditch |
| 37 | Peckham Bus Station to Putney Heath / Green Man |
| 159 | Streatham Station to Oxford Circus Station |
| 345 | Peckham Bus Station to Natural History Museum / Cromwell Road |
The five N routes run only in the small hours. Routes 35, 37, 159 and 345 run around the clock, so the 35 links Brixton with Shoreditch, and the 37 and 345 with Peckham, at any hour [5]. Journey Planner and the TfL Go app show when the next bus is due [7].
Cabs. Hail only a black cab, and book any minicab in an app, by phone or at the operator's office. Our Soho guide sets out TfL's minicab rules in full [7].
Brixton on MYSOVA
MYSOVA is a London social passport: clock in at bars, pubs and clubs, earn XP and meet people where you go. Brixton's zone carries 1.4×, level with Camden and Dalston [3]. At most venues a clock-in on the Free plan starts from 25 XP, and the zone turns it into 35; the paid Explorer and Icon plans multiply it again [8]. How clocking in and XP work covers the rest of the sum.
