Zone guide

Canary Wharf at night: the zone, the bars and the way home

By , founder ·

Short answer

Canary Wharf is in London's fare Zone 2, and so are all six stations inside MYSOVA's Canary Wharf zone: the Jubilee line's, the Elizabeth line's and four on the DLR [1][3]. Of those three railways, only the Jubilee line runs through the night, on Friday and Saturday nights [2]. MYSOVA draws Canary Wharf as one of the app's 17 zones, about a kilometre across, and a clock-in inside the zone earns 1.1× XP [3]. On MYSOVA's open-data venue map, 17 venues sit inside the zone: 7 bars, 3 cocktail bars, 2 pubs and 5 others [4]. On all seven nights, two bus routes run through the small hours from stops in the zone [5].

What zone is Canary Wharf?

Zone 2, whichever line you use [1]:

The three stations called Canary Wharf are separate buildings. The Elizabeth line station is about 300 metres from the Jubilee line's, and the DLR's about 240 metres [1]. The Jubilee line is the only Underground line here. Its station opened on 17 September 1999 as part of the Jubilee Line Extension, to a design by Sir Norman Foster [6].

TfL's fare zones set what you pay to travel. MYSOVA's zones are a separate map: areas where a clock-in in the app earns a multiplier.

Why is it called Canary Wharf?

After a fruit trade. In 1936, No. 32 berth of West Wood Quay, in the West India Docks' Import Dock, was built with a two-storey transit shed for Fruit Lines Ltd, a subsidiary of Fred Olsen Lines, for the Mediterranean and Canary Islands fruit trade, and it gained the name Canary Wharf [7]. The first of the West India Docks had opened in 1802 [8]. All the docks had closed by 1980; building on the present estate began in 1988, and its first buildings, One Canada Square among them, were finished in 1991 [7].

Where the MYSOVA zone runs

The Canary Wharf zone covers 0.82 square kilometres, about 950 metres from west to east and 1,060 metres from south to north [3]. The Elizabeth line station is about 90 metres from the zone's centre, and the Jubilee line station about 230 metres to its south [1][3].

All 17 venues on the map inside the zone lie within about 640 metres of the Jubilee line station, and 12 of them within 400 metres [1][4]. By their nearest postcode, all 17 are in E14 and in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, so one council licenses them [9]. Canary Wharf's zone stands on its own: the nearest other zone is Bermondsey's, about 2.3 kilometres to the west, at 1.3× [3].

What kind of places are there?

MYSOVA gives each venue one category. Of the 17 venues inside the zone on the map [4]:

CategoryVenues
Bar7
Cocktail bar3
Pub2
Club1
Live music1
Lounge1
Rooftop1
Wine bar1

Bars and cocktail bars make up 10 of the 17. The map's cocktail bars are The Alchemist, Bar Lina Canary Wharf and Clays Bar, and its rooftop bar is Pergola on the Wharf; all four are within about 340 metres of the Elizabeth line station [1][4]. Treat the table as a sample, because the map only holds venues we can place from open data [4]. The app's own catalogue is a separate list, and a venue placed in the wrong category would shift these counts.

Another 3 venues on the map sit within 300 metres outside the zone's edge, all of them pubs [3][4]. The server reads the zone from your phone's location when you clock in, so at those venues the 1.1× applies only if you are standing inside the boundary [11].

This post gives no opening hours, so check with the venue before you go. To find how late a venue may serve, and how Tower Hamlets' licensing policy sets hours, see how London's licensing hours work. The Canary Wharf zone page lists venues by name, and the London nightlife map shows where the zone runs.

Theatreship

The zone's live-music venue on the map is Theatreship, about 300 metres from the Jubilee line station [1][4]. It is a not-for-profit live music venue, cinema and arts centre on a converted historic cargo ship in the docks, and it opened to the public in January 2024 as the first vessel on the Canal and River Trust's Arts and Heritage Berth [10]. Its live music programme features traditional folk music and maritime heritage [10].

Getting home

Night Tube. On Friday and Saturday nights the Jubilee line runs all night between Stanmore and Stratford, and Canary Wharf is on it [2]. Westbound, the night trains call at Canada Water, London Bridge, Waterloo, Westminster, Green Park, Bond Street and Baker Street on the way to Stanmore; eastbound, they run through North Greenwich, Canning Town and West Ham to Stratford [2]. The DLR and the Elizabeth line are not on TfL's night network, so there is no all-night train from their stations [2]. Night fares are off-peak, and a Day Travelcard covers journeys that start before 04:30 the next day [2].

Night buses. TfL runs buses through the night on all seven nights, not only on Friday and Saturday [5][12]. Two routes have a timetabled bus in every hour from 01:00 to 04:59, on all seven nights and in both directions, from stops inside the zone [5]:

RouteOne direction, as TfL names its end stops
N277Crossharbour Asda to White Lion Street
N550Canning Town Bus Station to Trafalgar Square

Both run only at night [5]. Two more night routes towards central London, the N15 and the N551, stop at Upper North Street, about 80 metres outside the zone, where TfL's timetables show a bus in every hour from 01:00 to 04:59 in that direction on all seven nights [3][5]. Journey Planner and the TfL Go app plan the trip, and TfL's website shows when the next bus is due at your stop [12].

Cabs. Hail only a black cab, and book any minicab in an app, by phone or at the operator's office. TfL calls an unbooked minicab illegal and uninsured for passengers [12]. Our Soho guide sets out the rest of TfL's rules.

Canary Wharf on MYSOVA

MYSOVA is a London social passport: clock in at bars, pubs and clubs, earn XP and meet people where you go. Canary Wharf's zone carries 1.1×, level with Kensington and Notting Hill [3]. At most venues a clock-in on the Free plan starts from 25 XP; the zone makes it 27.5, which the server rounds to 28. The paid Explorer (£7.99 a month) and Icon (£14.99 a month) plans multiply it again [11]. How clocking in and XP work covers the rest of the sum, and Night Tube and night buses for 17 London areas covers the way home from the other zones.

Your first clock-in starts your passport.
