London at night

Night Tube and night buses for 17 London areas: getting home at night

By , founder ·

Short answer

On Friday and Saturday nights, TfL runs the Night Tube on six lines: the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines, and the Windrush line of London Overground [1]. Buses run through the night on all seven nights [2]. For 17 London areas, from Soho to Canary Wharf, this guide lists the stations in or beside each area, which of them have a night service, their fare zones, and the bus routes that run through the night from stops in or beside it [3][4][5]. Everything below was checked against TfL on 27 October 2026.

How this guide counts

  • The areas. Each area is a shape drawn on this site's map, not a borough or a postcode [5]. A station or a bus stop counts when TfL's position for it lies inside the shape or within 200 metres of its edge, in a straight line [3][4][5].
  • Night trains. A station's night lines are the lines whose night timetable calls there [3]. TfL lists no night service on any other Tube line, on the Elizabeth line, on the DLR or on the other Overground lines [1][3].
  • Night buses. A route counts when, at one of its stops in or beside the area, TfL's timetable shows a bus in every hour from 01:00 to 04:59 on all seven nights [4]. Routes numbered with an N are TfL's night routes. Some day routes pass the same test, because they run 24 hours.
  • Changes. TfL changes night routes and timetables. Each section is dated, and the sources list says what was read and when.

Station names are TfL's, without the word "station". A station is listed when it lies inside the area or within 200 metres of its edge; the distance is given where it lies outside [3][5].

Fares at night

Night Tube and London Overground night fares are always off-peak [6]. An off-peak Day Travelcard also covers journeys that start before 04:30 the next day, so a Friday Travelcard still works in the early hours of Saturday [1][6]. On buses, an adult pay-as-you-go fare is £1.75, and the Hopper fare gives unlimited bus and tram journeys made within one hour of touching in. The daily cap on buses and trams is £5.25 [7].

Black cabs and minicabs

Only black cabs, the ones with the orange TAXI light, can be hailed in the street or taken from a rank without booking [2]. A minicab has to be booked with a licensed operator, in an app, by phone or at its office, and the booking confirmation has to show the number plate, the driver's first name, their private hire licence number and a photo [2]. TfL calls unbooked minicabs illegal and uninsured for passengers [2]. The Soho guide sets out the rules in full.
